Pecos & the Rooftops

A country-rock band from Lubbock, Texas, Pecos and the Rooftops fuse earthy rural grit with a low-key brand of chugging midtempo rock. When their slow-grooved single "This Damn Song" became an unlikely streaming hit, label interest grew and in early 2023 the band inked a deal with Warner Bros. They made their full-length debut in June of that year. A group of old college friends from Lubbock, Pecos Hurley (vocals, guitar), Brandon Jones (rhythm guitar), Sheldon Baker (lead guitar), Kalen Davis (bass), and Kris Stephens (drums) began jamming together casually, hanging out and playing cover songs. They were barely a band in 2017 when a casual jam yielded the bones for what would become their flagship song. Hurley eventually completed the lyrics to the slow-burner "This Damn Song," which grew into a surprise streaming hit when it was released in 2019. After that, Pecos and the Rooftops took their career more seriously, committing themselves to a rigorous schedule of touring, writing, and rehearsals. Despite early label interest, they opted to remain independent and released an EP, Red Eye, in 2020. The band's roots in Texas country were apparent, though songs like 2021's "Last Night's Lashes" and 2022's "Hurt No More" leaned heavily into their rock side. Likewise, Hurley's low, rumbling baritone suited a stylistic mix that fell somewhere between outlaw and grungy alt-rock. By January 2023, they felt ready to take the next step and signed on with Warner Bros. which helped them make their first album. The self-titled Pecos & the Rooftops appeared in June, anchored by their hit "This Damn Song" and a spate of correspondingly dark-hued country-rockers.
