Steven Feifke
Pianist, arranger, and educator Steven Feifke is both a gifted jazz improviser and bandleader. He emerged in the 2010s and became the youngest person to win the Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album with 2022's Generation Gap Jazz Orchestra.
Born in 1991 in Lexington, Massachusetts, Feifke started on piano at age four, taking instruction from his mother. He progressed quickly, eventually discovering jazz while a student at both Lexington High School and the New England Conservatory of Music Preparatory School. From there, he studied both jazz and economics at NYU before earning his Master of Music in Jazz Composition from the Manhattan School of Music. Early accolades followed, including winning the David Baker Prize at the Ravinia Music Festival and twice becoming a semifinalist at the Thelonious Monk Jazz Piano Competition. Away from performing, Feifke sits on the faculty of the Berklee College of Music and The New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and has lectured at Yale University, New York University, and Northern Illinois University.
In 2015, he made his solo debut with Peace in Time, a septet date featuring trumpeter Benny Benack III, saxophonists Andrew Gould, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, guitarist Alex Wintz, bassist Raviv Markovitz, and drummer Jimmy Macbride. He again paired with Benack for the holiday-themed 2019 big band album Season's Swinging Greetings.
In 2019, Feifke delivered his sophomore big band set with Kinetic, featuring Benack, Gould, and others, including vocalist Veronica Swift. The pianist also conducted arrangements for Swift's acclaimed 2021 album This Bitter Earth. In 2022, Feifke released the Generation Gap Jazz Orchestra, a third big band LP. Featuring trumpeter Bijon Watson, with appearances by Kurt Elling, Sean Jones, Lekowitz-Brown, and others, it won the Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album, making Feifke (31 years old at the time) the youngest ever to win the award.
