Guarneri Trio Prague
The Guarneri Trio Prague is among the world's most durable and prominent chamber groups, with a membership unchanged since its founding in the mid-'80s. The trio has recorded prolifically for the Supraphon and Praga labels.
The Guarneri Trio Prague was founded in 1986 by pianist Ivan Klanský, violinist Čeněk Pavlík, and violist Marek Jerie. The name was changed to Guarneri Trio Prague (the English name is used even in Czech contexts) in 1989, perhaps to avoid confusion with another Guarneri Trio in the Netherlands. Its membership has not changed. Two of the group members play instruments from the golden age of Italian stringed instrument manufacturing; Pavlík plays the "Zimbalist" violin by Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù, and Jerie an Andrea Guarneri cello from 1684. The group takes its name from these instrument makers. An early recording, Guarneri Trio Prague Plays Dvořák and Smetana, appeared on the Supraphon label in 1994. A recording of trios by Mendelssohn and Brahms appeared later that year; the group often plays Czech repertory but just as often focuses on the mainstream Austro-German tradition. A complete cycle of Beethoven's piano trios appeared on the Praga label in the late '90s, with a box set of the performances issued in 2000.
The Guarneri Trio Prague is internationally known, having toured Europe, the Americas, East Asia, Australia, and the Philippines. It has played major venues in Prague, in several Western European cities, and in London. The trio has been especially in demand at festivals, including the Schleswig-Holstein Festival in Germany, the Prague Spring, and the Folles Journées in Nantes, France, as well as festivals in Bilbao, Spain, and Tokyo, Japan. The Guarneri Trio Prague has continued to record for both Supraphon and Praga (later Praga Digitals), issuing an album of Haydn piano trios on the latter label in 2023. By that time, the group's recording catalog comprised more than 25 items.
