Gerald Toto
Born in Saint-Cloud (Hauts-de-Seine, France) in 1967, Gérald Toto grew up there, absorbed by his passion for music. His tastes ranged from Afro-Cuban to Afro-American, Jamaican and African music, as well as jazz by artists such as Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Ron Carter, and folk by the likes of Simon and Garfunkel and Neil Young. Gérald Toto has been playing bass since his mid-teens, after having been introduced to classical guitar. He first played in high school bands, before stopping his university studies to devote himself fully to his musical career. In the mid-1990s, he was a regular fixture on Parisian stages, and after a brief interlude as composer and artistic director on the debut album by raï singer Faudel, he released his first solo opus, Les Premiers Jours. His meeting with legendary jazz-world bassist Richard Bona and Congolese multi-instrumentalist Lokua Kanza led to a first trio album, Toto Bona Lokua , in 2004. The three men met again in 2017 for the opus Bondeko, after Gérald Toto had enriched his personal discography with several other records, including Kitchenette in 2006, Spring Fruits in 2011 and Sway in 2017.
