Anna Paradiso
Keyboardist Anna Paradiso performs on the harpsichord, clavichord, fortepiano, and organ. She heads her own chamber ensemble and has premiered both unknown Baroque works and contemporary pieces written for her.
Paradiso was born in Bari, Italy, on the Adriatic coast, in 1976, and was raised there. She studied piano at the Conservatory of Bari and earned a diploma from the school. Also interested in literature, she attended Oxford University and earned a Ph.D. in ancient Greek and Latin philology. In 2006, she moved to Stockholm, Sweden, following her husband, recorder virtuoso Dan Laurin. By 2008 she had decided to switch careers and dedicated herself to music. She earned a master's degree, studying with harpsichordist Mayumi Kamata and electronic musician Ulf Söderberg; she has also pursued jazz and crossover projects during her career. Paradiso went on for harpsichord lessons in Paris with Christophe Rousset. She has performed as a soloist around Europe, the U.S., and East Asia, and also in Lebanon. Paradiso specializes in Italian Baroque music and has also often performed the music of Baroque composer Johan Helmich Roman. She co-founded and led the ensemble Paradiso Musicale, in which Laurin plays recorder; this group gives historically oriented performances of music by J.S. Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, and Georg Philipp Telemann. Paradiso has continued to play modern piano, and she has expanded her activities to include the organ, fortepiano, and clavichord.
Paradiso has recorded exclusively for the BIS label, beginning with the album Songs of Yesterday in 2010. She has recorded music of Roman, including sets of 12 of his keyboard sonatas, and, with Laurin, 12 of his flute sonatas. In addition, she has made albums of music by Italian Baroque composers, including the little-known Domenico Paradisi, whose music she explored on the 2020 album Paradiso Plays Paradisi.
