Tomasz Konieczny
The success of bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny took on international dimensions in the late 2010s and 2020s. Konieczny is also an actor with credits in many Polish films.
Konieczny was born on January 10, 1972, in Lodz, Poland. He attended the Film, Television, and Theatre School in Lodz, studying acting, and he went on to appear in many Polish films, including one by star director Andrzej Wajda, The Ring With a Crowned Eagle. He has been seen on television and stage, and he has also worked as a director, but after finishing his program in Lodz, Konieczny switched to singing and studied voice at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy in Warsaw. He went on to the Hochschule Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden, Germany, where he studied with Christian Elßner. He placed second at the International Dvořák competition in Karlsbad, Germany, and won various other prizes. In 1997, Konieczny made his operatic debut as Figaro in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro in Poznán, Poland. He held season-long positions at Oper Leipzig and the Theater Lübeck in Germany, and, beginning in 2002-2003, he had a long stint as a permanent cast member at the Nationaltheater Mannheim. In 2006, he added the position of ensemble member at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein to his résumé.
Increasingly often in the 2010s, Konieczny made appearances at leading houses in western Europe and North America, including the Semperoper in Dresden (as Alberich in Wagner's Das Rheingold and Siegfried) in 2008 and as Berg's Wozzeck at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in 2015. He has also been in demand as a concert singer, and in 2012, he made his recording debut in that field on the Naxos label on a recording of Krzysztof Penderecki's Cantcum Canticorum Salomonis with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Antoni Wit. His debut at Italy's La Scala came as the Commendatore in Mozart's Don Giovanni in 2017. Konieczny has appeared as far afield as the New National Theatre of Tokyo, in 2018, as the Devil in Offenbach's Les contes d'Hoffmann. In the same year, he appeared at Bayreuth in Wagner's Lohengrin. In 2019, Konieczny returned to the role of Alberich at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He appeared on various other operatic recordings, and in 2022, he was heard on the Orfeo label's recording of Antal Doráti's Der Künder. In the same year, he recorded vocal works by Liszt on the album Liszt: Legends of the Saints, Vol. 1, with the Orchester Wiener Akademie.
