Reinoud Van Mechelen
Tenor Reinoud Van Mechelen specializes in Baroque music and has appeared with many leading European early music ensembles. In the late 2010s and 2020s, his career expanded beyond the Low Countries.
Van Mechelen was born in Leuwen (Louvain), Belgium, on May 29, 1987. His musical career began early as a member of the Clari Cantuli children's choir, but he did not begin taking classes as a solo vocalist until relatively late, in the mid-2000s decade. Van Mechelen studied with Anne Mertens and Nicholas Achten in Leuwen and then enrolled at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels, studying with Dina Grossberger. In 2007, he gained attention with a performance in André Cardinal Destouches' Le Carnaval et la Folie at the European Baroque Academy in Ambronay, France, under the baton of leading early music conductor Hervé Niquet. By the time he graduated from the Royal Conservatory in 2012, he had already joined the ensemble Le Jardin des Voix, headed by William Christie and Paul Agnew, and later, he joined Christie's Les Arts Florissants, a pioneering and prominent group in the field of French Baroque music. In 2013, Van Mechelen made his recording debut, backing Achten, a baritone, on an Alpha recording of works by Purcell, How Pleasant 'tis to Love. He appeared on several more albums on Alpha.
With Les Arts Florissants, Van Mechelen toured Europe, appearing in such major venues as the Château de Versailles, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. He also appeared with many other top early music ensembles, including Collegium Vocale, Le Concert Spirituel, La Petite Bande, and Les Talens Lyriques. He has made prominent appearances as a soloist, including one in 2014 with the Liverpool Philharmonic as the Evangelist in Bach's St. John Passion, BWV 245. By the late 2010s, his reputation had spread to continental Europe as well; he appeared under the baton of Simon Rattle as Hippolyte in Rameau's Hippolyte et Aricie. In addition to Alpha, Van Mechelen has appeared on Glossa, Ricercar, Château de Versailles, and other labels. His work has focused on early music but not exclusively; for the Musique en Wallonie label, he recorded an album of songs by Édouard Lassen. In 2024, Van Mechelen appeared with Les Talens Lyriques on the group's recording of Lully's Atys for the Alpha label.
