Jeremy Dutcher
Jeremy Dutcher is an Indigenous singer, composer, ethnomusicologist, and activist who combines the songs and stories of his community with elements of jazz, pop, and neo-classical music. His debut album, 2018's Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa, took home the Polaris Music Prize. He released his sophomore effort, Motewolonuwok, in 2024.
Dutcher identifies as two-spirit, a modern variant of gender fluidity used within the Indigenous North American community. A Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) member of the Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick, Dutcher didn't grow up speaking Wolastoqey, a language with less than 500 speakers left. After moving to Toronto to pursue a music career, the classically trained tenor immersed himself in the language and culture of his people. The resulting Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa, his debut album, was sung entirely in Wolastoqey, marrying the songs of his forebearers to the Western classical tradition he learned as an operatic tenor at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. The LP earned Dutcher a Juno Award and the 2018 Polaris Music Prize. For his sophomore release, Dutcher continued to mine the early 20th century wax-cylinder recordings from the Canadian Museum of History that helped define his debut, while adding English-language songs as well. Motewolonuwok appeared in 2024.
