Uncle Waffles

South Africa-based DJ Lungelihle Zwane (aka Uncle Waffles) became an early figurehead for the amapiano genre, which mixes elements of deep house, jazz, vocals, and percussion. Originally from Eswatini, Swaziland, she taught herself to DJ while working at a TV station, which gave her access to equipment. There were more opportunities for shows in South Africa, so she cut her teeth there and eventually moving there permanently. Her status within the amapiano scene skyrocketed after a clip of her performing went viral, opening the door to numerous bookings, including several shows in the U.K. Her debut EP, Red Room Dragon, dropped in 2022.
