Subject 13
David Stewart and Roy Bleau formed Subject 13 by blending their main influences, specifically the mellower side of jazz and rough-and-tumble drum'n'bass. The duo grew up in London's Hackney and had played football together since they were teenagers. Stewart dropped out of college to begin DJing (mostly hip-hop and soul), and by 1990 was producing hardcore tracks as Eternity. He later reunited with Bleau, and the pair recorded singles for Fabio's Creative Source Records, Basement and L.T.J Bukem's Good Looking. Subject 13 contributed to Bukem's 1996 compilation Earth, Vol. 1 and released their debut album, The Black Steele Project, in late 1997 on Crammed Discs. Stewart and Bleau are also well-respected for their Sub Bass club-nights (geared specifically for the younger crowd) and their own label, Vibe'z Recordings (many tracks from which are included on the compilation Subject 13 Presents Vibe'z Recordings).
