Philip Chiu

Pianist Philip Chiu is known for both solo and collaborative efforts. He is also a noted educator in the Montreal area. Chiu was born in Hong Kong, probably in 1984; a feature on Winnipeg's Classic107 radio station in March of 2024 described him as "about to turn the corner on 40 years of age." When he was three, he moved with his family to Canada. Chiu grew up in North York, Ontario, in suburban Toronto, and he later lived in the city of London. He has stated that as a child, he tried to assimilate into Canadian culture, but he would later seek to reconnect with his heritage by playing the music of Chinese Canadian composers such as Alice Ping Yee Ho. By his teens, he was playing Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25. Chiu attended Toronto's Glenn Gould School, winning the school's concerto competition in 2005 (which brought with it the chance to play Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, Op. 26, under conductor Tania Miller), and graduating in 2006. He scored a breakthrough in 2015 as the inaugural winner of the Prix Goyer, whose $125,000 prize is one of the biggest in the world. The following year, Chiu made his recording debut on the Analekta label with violinist Kerson Leong, releasing the recital album Bis. For the first part of his career, Chiu was active mostly as a chamber player. His collaborators are a distinguished group that includes violinists James Ehnes and Bomsori Kim, flutist Emmanuel Pahud, and cellist Raphael Wallfisch. After winning the Prix Goyer he has emphasized solo recitals more often. Chiu has appeared at major concert halls in Canada, the U.S., Japan, and France, with a chamber music appearance at the prestigious La Jolla Music Society in California in its 50th-anniversary season. In addition to Analekta, Chiu has recorded for Leaf Music and for ATMA Classique, where he released the solo recital Voyages in 2024. As an educator, Chiu created the Collaborative Piano Program at the Domaine Forget International Academy. He has taught and/or served as an accompanist at the Université de Montréal, McGill University, and the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal.
