Jordan Mackampa

This British-Congolese singer/songwriter delivers heartfelt, assured, pop-focused material dealing with themes of identity, struggle, reflection, and love. Whereas Mackampa's earliest EPs betrayed an affinity with the searching, pastoral indie folk of artists like Bon Iver and M. Ward, later material, such as 2024's Welcome Home, Kid!, greater amplified the influence of classic soul artists such as Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, and Bill Withers. Born in 1994 in Zaire, Mackampa relocated the following year with his mother to London, England. By school age, he was required to move again, this time to Coventry, in the country's Midlands. He attended Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School, close to their home in Wood End in the city's suburbs. By the age of 12, he had begun to learn guitar and write songs, and he took advantage of the recording studio based within his local youth center. Here, he took formative steps to fuse the influence of music introduced to him by his mother -- slick soul and traditional African rhythms -- with that of the eclectic array of artists he'd discovered for himself, such as B.B. King, Bob Dylan, and Coldplay. From 2012, Mackampa studied music at the University of Northampton, and by the end of his course in 2015, he began to play live at modest venues in London, the city that would ultimately become his home once again. Mackampa self-released a George Ezra-inspired debut single, "Same Faces," in February 2016 and spent much of the year touring the U.K. to promote his debut EP, Physics, a folksy set that appeared that September. A prestigious European tour supporting Rhiannon Giddens preceded a second EP, May 2017's Tales from the Broken, a largely somber record themed around struggles through adversity. Its one rousing moment, "Battlecry," proved a game changer for Mackampa when it became the opening theme to BBC TV's Our Girl, a military drama with a viewership of millions. The rest of 2017 played just as key a role in his development, bringing a set at Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' 40th anniversary Hyde Park event, a European tour of his own (calling at festivals in Germany, the Netherlands, and France), and a record deal with London's AWAL. Early 2018 found Mackampa back in Germany supporting local heroes Giant Rooks before Covers -- an imprint of Mahogany -- distributed his meditative, José González-inspired version of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side." Further European dates throughout April saw him open for Jeremy Loops and Blanco White ahead of his debut release for AWAL, "One in the Same." That stand-alone single brought a ramp-up in sound for Mackampa, with a full band augmented by an arrangement of dramatic, brooding strings. Mid- to late 2019 brought the promotional slow build towards his full-length debut, taking in further European festival appearances and an extensive U.S. tour with Amber Run. Between then and early 2020, four pre-release singles were issued including the socially conscious, Gaye-inspired "What Am I" and the upbeat pop-soul of "Magic." On arrival in March 2020, Foreigner was a lavishly produced debut album infused with the sights and sounds of city life while pushing Mackampa's soulful tone to the forefront. January 2021's Come Around EP was an even deeper venture in slick, sophisticated urban soul, featuring Rhodes piano and sometimes recalling Sade in her prime. That December brought Live from Studio 2, a re-recording of the EP at Abbey Road. Although 2022 did not bring any additional releases, it did see Mackampa perform a sold-out show at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall. "Champion," 2023's collaboration with the Belgian hip-hop duo Blackwave., was an experimental step, utilizing a rich production palette that simultaneously retained Mackampa's easy flowing, radio-friendly appeal. Mackampa's sophomore full-length, 2024's Welcome Home, Kid!, was a confident and upfront funk and soul set, expunging the shy indie folk of his early days to fly headlong into commercial R&B.
