Grégory Privat
Son of José Privat, a member of the group Malavoi, Martinique-born Grégory Privat (b. 1984) studied classical piano for ten years, before turning to jazz and improvisation. First in Toulouse, where he completed his studies, then in Paris, he played in several bands and tried his luck in piano competitions. Noticed at the Montreux Festival and the Martial Solal Competition, he recorded his first album, Ki Koté, released in 2010. The next, released in 2013, is entitled Tales of Cyparis and tells the story of a Martinican prisoner turned acrobat. The specialist critics were won over by Luminescence (2015), the pianist's third album with percussionist Sonny Troupé, which was nominated for a Victoires du jazz award. The following year saw him form an original trio with Linley Marthe (double bass) and Tilo Bertholo (drums) for the album Family Tree.
