Dominique Grange

Dominique Grange began her career as a singer with the rive gauche movement, then became an interpreter and spokesperson for the events of May 68, and continued in this protest vein in collaboration with her husband, cartoonist Jacques Tardi. Born in Aix-les-Bains on January 1, 1940, she spent her teenage years in Lyon, before studying in Paris, where she took drama classes and made her stage debut. A guitarist, she sang her repertoire in Left Bank cabarets such as Le Cheval d'Or and Le Port du Salut, and appeared on television in the soap opera Le Temps des copains with Henri Tisot. In 1963, she recorded her first EP for the Bel Air label, followed by two others, before meeting Guy Béart, with whom she sang a duet in the Bienvenue à... show, and accompanied on tour. and accompanied him on tour. Her 4th EP, Les Jeanne D'Arc, has a pop tone, and is the first reference for the latter's Disques Temporel. Aware of the events of May '68, Dominique Grange takes up the cause of the protest movement and records for the independent label Expression Spontanée a first album written and composed in her own hand, which symbolizes this era, Chansons de Mai..., from which are taken the EP La Pègre and the single Nous sommes les nouveaux partisans. She continued in this vein with the musical Je ne veux pas mourir idiot (1969), based on the cartoonist Georges Wolinski and featuring the singer Évariste. An editorial secretary at the weekly BD, she met Jacques Tardi in 1977, who designed the cover of her new pop-rock album Hammam Palace (1981), and with whom she married in 1983. They worked together on the drawing/music projects L'Utopie Toujours (2004) and 1968-2008... N'effacez Pas Nos Traces! (2008), which celebrates May 68 through old and new songs. The collaboration between the Juste Une Trace label and Éditions Casterman continues with Des Lendemains Qui Saignent (2009), presented on stage, then Le Dernier Assaut (2016) and Chacun de Vous Est Concerné (2018) with the Accordzéâm group.
