Catherine Collard
Pianist Catherine Collard's specialties included works by such composers as Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Franz Joseph Haydn, but she also incorporated works by prominent 20th century composers such as Arnold Schoenberg, Gilbert Amy, and Olivier Messiaen. She was a notable educator, and her recording career spanned more than two decades.
Collard was born on August 11, 1947, in the Thuir commune in southern France. At 14, she entered the Paris Conservatory, studying with Germaine Mounier, Yvonne Loriod, and Yvonne Lefébure, among others. While there, she earned First Prizes in piano (1964) and chamber music (1966). Collard quickly found success elsewhere as well, earning prizes at several international competitions, including the Olivier Messiaen Competition that was held at the Royan Festival. She made her recording debut in 1972 on the Philips label with a performance of André Boucourechliev's Archipel IV. In 1976, she took up a piano professor post at the Conservatory of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés.
Along with being active as a soloist, Collard also had a notable career as a collaborative pianist. Chief among her frequent partners was pianist Anne Queffélec; other collaborators included cellist Suzanne Ramon, flutist Philippe Bernold, and contralto Nathalie Stutzmann, among many others. Collard went on to record for a number of labels in the 1970s and through the '80s, most notably the Erato label, which issued several recordings of piano works by Schumann. After Erato became part of the Warner Classics catalog, several of these recordings were reissued. On the advice of pianist Bruno Rigutto, Collard began a fruitful relationship with the Lyrinx label in the late '80s, which issued a dozen of her recordings. Her Lyrinx albums include Mozart's Piano Sonatas, Intégrale inachevée (1991) and three volumes of Haydn piano sonatas. Collard died of cancer on October 10, 1993, at age 46. In 1998, the Ina label released a collection titled Les Jeunes Années that offered performances of music by a variety of composers, including Gilbert Amy, Bach, and Schoenberg.
