Fabio Mechetti
Conductor Fabio Mechetti has held important conducting posts in South America, North America, and Asia. He was well known in the late '80s as associate conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., where he led concerts on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.
Mechetti was born in São Paulo, Brazil, on August 27, 1957. He studied music at the Juilliard School in New York, eventually earning master's degrees in both conducting and composition. He stayed on in the U.S., conducting, at various times, orchestras in Seattle, Buffalo, Columbus, and other cities, and from 1985 to 1989, he worked under Mstislav Rostropovich with the National Symphony Orchestra. In 1989, he landed his first permanent post as associate conductor of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra in New York. He became music director in Syracuse in 1993, and that year, he added the music directorship of the Spokane Symphony Orchestra to his curriculum vitae. He remained on the job in Spokane until 2004. Mechetti also served as resident director of the San Diego Symphony during this period. In 1999, he began a long tenure as music director of the Jacksonville Symphony, of which he continues to serve as music director emeritus. Meanwhile, his fame was spreading both in his home country of Brazil and abroad. He made conducting appearances in Venezuela, Mexico, and Spain, led major Japanese symphony orchestras and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and traveled to New Zealand to conduct the Auckland Philharmonia. A win at the Nicolai Malko Conducting Contest in Copenhagen led to appearances with Scandinavian orchestras. When Mechetti was named the principal conductor of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in Kuala Lumpur for the 2014-2015 season, he became the first Brazilian to conduct a major symphony orchestra anywhere in Asia.
Mechetti began to make more frequent appearances in his home country in the 2000s, and in 2008, he was named conductor and artistic director of the newly formed Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra in Belo Horizonte, and he has built the group into a major performing organization in South America. With that group, he has made several recordings for the Naxos label, including a 2019 album devoted to the neglected Brazilian composer Alberto Nepomuceno. Through the COVID-19 pandemic, Mechetti and the Minas Gerais Philharmonic continued to make recordings of neglected Brazilian repertory, including sacred works by the emperor-composer Pedro I of Brazil in 2022, and, the following year, operatic preludes and overtures by 19th century opera composer Carlos Gomes.
