About Playlist
Although "Sub Pop" was birthed as a fanzine in 1979, the label's genesis as a standalone entity releasing music came in 1986 with the release of Sub Pop 100, a compilation album (which was naturally a limited edition) featuring the underground rockers from the Pacific Northwest like U-Men and the Wipers alongside the likes of Sonic Youth, Naked Raygun, and Scratch Acid. This release had everything Sub Pop would become known for, from its unserious self-aggrandizing tone to its insanely heightened tastemaking that made punk rock and all its offshoots seem exciting and weird and fun again. For the next year, the label focused almost exclusively on bands from Seattle and other nearby towns, releasing the debut of Soundgarden and the pre-Pearl Jam/pre-Mudhoney band Green River, as well as less consequential (but still powerful) bands like Girl Trouble. And although the 1988 release of Mudhoney's "Touch Me I'm Sick" is widely seen as Ground Zero for the Grunge Explosion®, Sub Pop was quickly expanding its purview beyond the "Seattle Sound," with releases by psych bands, garage bands, Americana bands, and even French grunge bands. After the release of Nirvana's "Love Buzz" single and the Bleach LP, the label's reach quickly grew even larger, and the launch of the Sub Pop Singles Club meant that exclusive 45s by the likes of Dinosaur Jr., Fugazi, and Smashing Pumpkins were getting released alongside records by soon-to-be-sadly-forgotten bands like Dickless and the Lonely Moans. By the time the Singles Club released a split single by Denver rockers the Fluid and Nirvana in January 1991, Sub Pop had released nearly 90 different singles, EPs, and albums. T his playlist collates 50 tracks from some of the best of them. (Note: Not all of the tracks on this playlist are currently on Sub Pop releases, since some of them were originally released as one-off singles or compilation tracks, or are simply not available to stream in their original form.)
