About Playlist
American singer, actor and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte was known as the "King of Calypso," a musical style originating in Trinidad and Tobago. He earned this stage name following the huge success of his eponymous album, released on the RCA Victor label in 1956. Among his most indelible tracks are the hits "Banana Boat Song" and "Jump in the Line," which memorably appeared in Tim Burton's 1988 film Beetlejuice, earning Belafonte a new and younger audience. In addition to his music, Harry Belafonte always remained involved in many humanitarian causes. He helped launch the We Are the World charity campaign in 1985, became a Unicef goodwill ambassador two years later, helped organise Nelson Mandela's rally at Yankee Stadium during his visit to the United States in 1990, and continued to defend human rights for the rest of his life. Belafonte also had a deep friendship with Martin Luther King Jr. and played a pivotal role in organizing the 1963 March on Washington. Harry Belafonte died at age 96 on April 25, 2023.
