Waxahatchee, the solo vehicle for songwriter Katie Crutchfield, has always drawn influence from equal parts indie and Americana. On 2020's Saint Cloud, Crutchfield leaned into Southern gothic folk and vintage country. Tigers Blood, the first Waxahatchee album in four years, focuses heavily on the latter—a thrilling development that fits her voice and songwriting like a glove. Aided by a stable of musical collaborators, Crutchfield oversees harmonica-augmented ramshackle twang ("Burns Out at Midnight"), dabbles in stripped-down acoustic fare ("Crimes of the Heart"), and circles around to solemn, spiritual folk (the title track). The stripped-down "365" is even more stunning: Crutchfield initially earmarked the sparse tune for country star Wynonna Judd, but kept the song for herself; appropriately, it's a touching conversation about addiction, a theme she revisits often in her work. Lead single "Right Back To It," a standout duet with MJ Lenderman, is even more piercing. Crutchfield exudes the weathered warmth of Emmylou Harris, while Lenderman echoes the late Jason Molina, as the pair sing of tiny bumps and uncertainties within a long-term relationship. Lenderman is a prominent presence throughout Tigers Blood, contributing electric guitar and harmonies to various songs in addition to "Right Back To It," while Spencer Tweedy adds drums and extra percussion and Phil Cook plays subtle banjo. Crutchfield's indie roots even collide with ragged Southern rock on "Bored," a song that incorporates pedal steel into the fray. For good measure, Tigers Blood also features some of Crutchfield's most eloquent and thought-provoking lyrics yet about the uncertainties of life, love and the human condition, leading to vivid imagery ("I'm an outlaw in the court of strong opinions") and knotty narratives that offer no easy answers. In the end, Tigers Blood feels like the Waxahatchee album Crutchfield has been destined to make for her entire career. © Annie Zaleski/Qobuz
