Cambridge’s famous King’s College choir has recorded Rachmaninoff’s Vespers once before, in 1999, under the purview of their music director Stephen Cleobury. This new recording was captured on the 150th anniversary of Sergei Rachmaninoff's birth, this time under the direction of the musicologist and choral and orchestral conductor Joseph Fort. As a sequel, it continues the tradition of orchestral and choral excellence in England, and of the King's College Choir in particular, while Fort’s growing discography for Delphian Records continues to receive widespread critical acclaim.
This version of what is one of the best-known works of Orthodox chant, sung by the choir of an Anglican chapel, reaffirms the universality of this music. The bright, responsive and clear young voices of the King's College choir even manage to bring out the musical phrases played with bells, an obsession that has run through all of Rachmaninoff's music since his childhood. Composed very quickly in the midst of the World War in 1915, the 15 hymns for choir and a cappella soloists are largely inspired by actual Orthodox rituals, although he has admitted to basing some of his most moving and sincere works off of what he called 'deliberate fakes'. Here, the brilliant virtuoso makes an unusual sidestep, into an introspective work that was equally praised by everyone from critics to audiences and religious authorities. © François Hudry/Qobuz
