The modern revival of Bach's music began in 1829, when the revision of the St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244, by the 20-year-old Felix Mendelssohn, had its premiere in Berlin. The performance, attended by VIPs from the Prussian king on down, was a tremendous success, a sellout that necessitated a repeat a week later. Mendelssohn cut about half the work, taking the ax especially to the arias and choruses but sparing most of the chorales and replacing archaic instruments with modern ones like clarinets. In 1841, he returned to his handiwork, restoring some of the cuts and suggesting a two-cello continuo for the organ part that was left unfinished. It is this version that is recorded here for the first time in a new edition published by Bärenreiter in Germany in 2023. The Bach Choir of Bethlehem and director Christopher Jackson retain the fortepiano accompaniment in the recitatives from the earlier version. The 1841 version has been recorded before, notably by the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra under Philippe Herreweghe, but this reading by a choir well-established enough to have its own distinctive sound (it was founded in 1898) is well worth hearing. Taken from several live performances at a church in the church's hometown of Bethlehem (Pennsylvania), the recording has a rich sound, with a desirably large choir of 80, all volunteers; Jackson forges excellent balances among the large forces, including the professional Bach Festival Orchestra. The soloists, especially soprano Clara Rottsolk and baritone William Sharp as a very grave Jesus, are standouts, with fine voices and strong engagement with the text. Those wishing to check out the rather rare 1841 version of what really should be called Bach-Mendelssohn in the graphics rather than Mendelssohn-Bach will welcome this fine reading.

Album review
