Five years after Hyperion, which made his transformation official (he was no longer a Parisian techno beatmaker, but an American-style producer, validated by his collabs with The Weeknd and Pharrell Williams), Gessaffelstein shifts gears yet again on Gamma, a concept album founded on a raw, dark energy drawn from rock, punk, and new wave. Once again, he’s collaborated with singer Yan Wagner on half of the tracks. The album opens with Wagner’s tortured voice on “Digital Slaves,” before sucking us into a vortex of dark synthpop where the echoes of Depeche Mode resonate throughout. Gesaffelstein then goes even further and raises the tension with “Hysteria,” which reenacts the whirlwind era of the late 2000’s, whereas “The Urge” summons the spirit of the New York no-wave scene of the early 80’s. And then you have the all-consuming frenzy that is “Mania” and “Tyranny,” which could have been written by the Ramones, just balanced by the obligatory ballad “Lost Love.” This “Dark Prince” is darker than ever. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
