A man with a passion for all music, and especially tango and jazz, the young German pianist Martin Klett presents a very interesting coupling here, juxtaposing the Premier Livre of Debussy's Préludes with that of George Crumb's Makrokosmos: two composers who each radically changed the musical language of their time.
The invitation to a journey presented by Debussy's Préludes is a real door to a dream-world, thanks to its unique musical environment which allows the pianist to modulate tones and colours. While the world of George Crumb is less well-known, it is just as fascinating thanks to its harmonies and various experimental piano techniques which were unknown in Debussy's time: scratching and pinching the strings, using glass cups and paper inside the instrument; asking the performer to sing, whistle, and whisper. The two collections, both influenced by Chopin, complement and answer one another perfectly. Let's hope that this beautiful album from Martin Klett will soon be joined by the two composers' respective Second Books...© François Hudry / Qobuz
