Mogwai's post-rock is well over twenty years old: but it's as sleek and youthful as ever. With Every Country's Sun, the Scots have created a ninth album which impresses as much as ever, thanks to the narrative force of its instrumental compositions, and the benefit of long experience. Sixteen years after their third album, Rock Action, Mogwai has returned one Dave Fridmann behind the console: the producer of most of the great records by Mercury Rev and the Flaming Lips, which is to say: he's a magician of mood, an artist of atmosphere, a maestro of blowing minds, a wizard of the wistful, we could go on... As ever with them, melancholy is never far off. It is even often mixed with a certain gravity, if not a martial tone.
