Facing the ultimate defeat of the Eastern Empire by the Ottoman Turks, and weakened by the rise of the Venetian mercantile empire, the Byzantine emperor Manuel II Palaiologos set out in 1399 on a visit to Western Europe to appeal for aid from Christian kingdoms. By 1400, he reached England, where he celebrated Christmas. The title of this release by Byzantine music specialists Cappella Romana makes it easy to imagine some kind of joint service, but actually, Manuel and King Henry IV celebrated separately. Nevertheless, this was a cross-cultural event of a sort rare in medieval times, and Cappella Romana brings it to life. No records survived of what exactly was sung at these services, but the music of both traditions was notated, and there is enough information to provide a speculative reconstruction. The English music includes monophonic pieces, from the repertory of so-called Sarum chant, simpler and sparer than the Gregorian variety (and not so often recorded), as well as polyphony; the Byzantine pieces are all monophonic, and some of them have named composers. What is most striking here is that Cappella Romana, although deeply immersed in Byzantine ways of singing (sample one of those tracks if one has not heard this style before), also accomplishes a very different and distinctive sound for the English pieces, adding an appealing bit of gravel in the texture. As with other Cappella Romana recordings, this one was splendidly recorded at the Madeleine Parish in Portland, Oregon. With detailed booklet notes exploring the various issues involved, this is a unique and fascinating medieval release.
