Le roman d’horreur de l’écrivain américain Stephen King, Shining, l’enfant lumière, a fait l’objet en 1980 d’une adaptation cinématographique de Stanley Kubrick, avec l’acteur Jack Nicholson, devenue un classique du film d’horreur. C’est aujourd’hui l’opéra qui s’empare du roman sur un livret de Mark Campbell et une musique du compositeur américain Paul Moravec. Récipiendaire du prix Pulitzer de musique, classé parfois parmi les « nouveaux tonalistes », Moravec a écrit cet ouvrage en 2016 pour l’Opéra du Minnesota avec le souci partagé par son librettiste de se rapprocher davantage du roman que ne l’avait fait le film.

Sans grandiloquence, la musique parvient parfaitement à créer le climat angoissant de cette sombre histoire de fantômes et de visions terrifiantes du passé. La mère et son petit garçon parviendront à surmonter le traumatisme qu’ils ont vécu jusqu’à la mort du père, fort opportunément tué par l’explosion de la chaudière de l’étrange et désert hôtel Overlook. D’une durée d’un peu moins de deux heures, l’opéra fait appel à 17 solistes s’exprimant dans un néoclassicisme mélodique à la Copland, mâtiné de Kurt Weill et de musique de film, facilitant le travail des chanteurs et la compréhension des auditeurs.

Dirigé par Gerard Schwarz à la tête du Kansas City Symphony, ce nouvel enregistrement de studio est dominé par l’excellent trio de tête composé du baryton Edward Parks dans le rôle du colérique et alcoolique écrivain Jack Torrance en mal d’inspiration, Kelly Kaduce dans celui de sa femme Wendy et de leur étrange fils aux dons de médium incarné de manière assez stupéfiante par Tristan Hallett, un jeune garçon treble. © François Hudry/QOBUZ
