Dans une discographie constellée de compilations et de duos très populaires (parfois décriés par les fans de reggae roots) il est bon de se rappeler que le tout premier album de UB40 était plus largement ancré dans une veine contestataire, correspondant à l'arrivée au pouvoir de Margaret Thatcher dans un pays en plein chaos politique et social.
A cette époque où en Angleterre, faiblissait l'impact des groupes punk et où fleurissaient des formations ska, tels The Specials représentants du label Two Tone, le savoureux mélange de rythmiques soft reggae, ska et dub de UB40, étoffé par le saxophone de Brian Travers et le synthétiseur dansant à souhait de Michael Virtue, constituait un son original provoquant un engouement populaire.
La partie revendicatrice et engagée de UB40 est évidente dans des titres comme « King », vibrant hommage au pasteur Martin Luther King, et l'inusable « Food For Thought » (souvent surnommé Ivory Madonna). Signing Off contient déjà de surprenantes reprises, catégorie dans laquelle UB40 allait devenir incontournable et, quasiment, baser son fonds de commerce. « I Think It's Going To Rain Today » de Randy Newman et surtout le mythique « Strange Fruit » de Billie Holiday, en constituent des exemples réussis.
L'album se hisse jusqu'à la seconde place des charts du Royaume-Uni, pour atteindre le statut de disque de platine. Un début en fanfare.
