Souvent aux prises avec des états dépressifs à répétition, Benjamin Britten se considérait souvent dans le même état d’esprit que ses frères en pensées Mahler et Chostakovitch, ce dernier étant devenu un véritable ami au point que les deux hommes allaient s’inspirer mutuellement. Avec son sens de la précision, du rythme et de la couleur, Sir Simon Rattle et ses musiciens du London Symphony Orchestra donnent ici des interprétations définitives de trois œuvres essentielles du compositeur anglais enregistrées lors de plusieurs concerts donnés au Barbican Hall dans la City de Londres. Britten reçoit la commande de l’émouvante Sinfonia da Requiem du gouvernement du Japon pour célébrer le 2600e anniversaire de son empire. La partition, d’une grande densité mais d’humeur maussade, sera violemment rejetée sous un prétexte fallacieux, provoquant un incident international vite étouffé par l’attaque de Pearl Harbour le 7 décembre 1941. Allégorie du printemps en quatre parties convoquant un choeur de garçons et des solistes, la Symphonie printanière répond à une commande de Serge Koussevitzky et de l’Orchestre de Boston. Ici, le passage de l’hiver au printemps ne ressemble nullement à l’oeuvre de Stravinsky. Basée sur des poèmes d’auteurs anglais, l’oeuvre se termine sur un message d’espoir en empruntant un chant du Moyen Âge. Cet album, somptueusement dirigé par Sir Simon Rattle, se termine par le très célèbre Guide de l’orchestre pour les jeunes (Variations et fugue sur un thème de Purcell) dans lequel les vertus pédagogiques sont associées au meilleur de l’oeuvre de Britten. © François Hudry/Qobuz
