"I Confess" startet seriös mit wohldosierter Piano-Eleganz, um im Fortlauf ein ganz prächtiges Eigenleben zwischen Blues, Country und Tom Waits-Walzer zu entwickeln. "A Sleep With No Dreaming" ergibt im Verbund mit der vorangegangenen Nummer eine Einheit, um dennoch unüberhörbar konträre Akzente zu setzen: lässig erkundet K.D.s Gitarrist hier Fifties-Sounds.
Mit viel Nonchalance und Entspanntheit punktet "The Water's Edge". Für besondere Momente sorgt eine effektvolle Hall-Gitarre, die sich nie vorlaut in den Vordergrund drängt, sondern als zusammenhaltendes Song-Scharnier fungiert. Der Track verbindet gleichermaßen Gospel-Elemente, Soul und Country. Alles zusammen ergibt eine höchst lebendig inszenierte Nummer, mit hörbar viel Spaß an der Sache eingespielt.
Erstmalig seit rund zwanzig Jahren legt die gebürtige Kanadierin einen Longplayer vor, der komplett mit eigener Band eingespielt wurde. Siss Boom Bang erweisen sich als würdige Nachfolger der Reclines, und bilden mit K.D. Lang eine ideale Einheit.
"Sugar Buzz" erinnert dank stimmlicher Virtuosität an unwiderstehlichen Sirenen-Gesang. "Sing It Loud" lädt mit Piano, dezent agierender Orgel und kultivierten Melodie-Bögen in einen Nachtclub der Upper-Class. Mit der im Fortlauf stärker betonten Rhythmik kommt der Track immer besser in Fahrt. K. D. gibt hier äußerst überzeugend die Nachtclub-Croonerin. Der David Byrne-Classic "Heaven" zeigt sich in Miss Langs Umsetzung bestens aufgehoben.
Das unaufdringliche Schlagzeug und die nuancierten Arrangements agieren im Zweifel lieber zurückhaltend. Gesanglich zieht K.D. dafür alle Register: das Umschalten von leisen, intimen Töne hin in dramatische Höhen gelingt beeindruckend - Leidenschaft und Einsatz sorgen für perfekt abrundende Würze.
