At 33 years old, was Willi Carlisle born in the wrong era? Since his self-produced debut album in 2016, the American has taken up the torch of long-standing musical styles, as timeless as they are untarnished, in particular folk and country. He’s not the only one on the clock, but with him it really feels as if it were Austin in 1975, New York in 1960 in the midst of the folk revival, Nashville in 1952, or 20 years earlier in the Appalachian mountains, even perhaps a century before that in an Irish pub. His music sounds truly old-timey: acoustic, honest, simple, authentic. Music to listen to by the bar after a hard day of work, tapping your foot while trying not to spill your beer in the lap of the person next to you. Or on a picket line. Or in the street.

It’s rustic, with violin, accordion, wailing guitars, and a solid voice with songs so full of stories and atmospheres it could rival any bookshelf or Netflix subscription. His new album doesn’t differ fundamentally from his previous ones. Having gone through the theatre world and a punk rock group in his youth, Willi Carlisle has now undoubtedly become a pure folk singer, songwriter, and performer, protest songs included - a progressive and poetic singer with a worn-in blue collar, a social conscience, and a good dose of humanism to go around. He has a chilling voice that carries his convictions with great nuance, in a blend of softness and vehemence. A true storyteller who fully embodies his songs and knows how to captivate the listener, carrying them away singing tales of wide open spaces and American life. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
