Text in englischer Sprache verfügbar

For her second album of originals, Andra Day—best known for the striking ballad "Rise Up," which became an anthem of social justice protests in 2020—chose to combine her given name, Cassandra, with Cherith. The latter is derived from the Hebrew word for "to cut away," and the songs explore the sometimes painful need to separate herself from the past. Even the most rote of done-me-wrong ballads would sound powerful sung in her incredible alto, which she can yield with a feathery touch or maximum power; there is a chill-inducing quality to her tone, like velvet rubbed against the grain. But Day is also a talented songwriter who puts real emotion into her written words. She has said much of the record is autobiographical and that some of the messy relationship stories recounted in lyrics are "verbatim," including the ugly line "Screaming at me on the tarmac before I fly/ Why you so insecure?" in slow-rolling "Narcos (H.C.D.)." Still, she takes her own blame: "Maybe next time I'll learn/ Not to fill the space with venomous gossip/ Just 'cause I'm lonely." It's a theme that plays out over and over. On "Probably"—a bit of finger-snapping R&B that rides a bright keyboard groove — Day's voice coos and unfurls like a billowing sheet as she considers whether to have her say or move on and let sleeping dogs lie ("Is it worth maybe settin' the record straight?/ And no hard feelings, you just loose-lippin'"). And on "Maybe Next Time," she makes it clear that she's had enough of an ex's jealousies and infidelities, grabbing the word "whoa"— or "woe"?—and shaking it to its core. Day has played Billie Holiday on screen (The United States vs. Billie Holiday), and you can hear the legend's influence on tracks like soulful "Heavy on My Mind," which also features a smooth guest rap from Wale, and "Nervous." On the latter, which is guided by warm, gliding bass, Day particularly adopts Holiday's soft, rounded style: "You know my eau de vie is more like, like Hennessy/ And don't try to dilute it, no/ I know I can come on strong, that's just where my head is." Punctuated by breathy horns and an earworm riff, "Midnight" is Motown cool. Day applies a Zap Mama-like staccato delivery on jazzy "In the Meantime," with vibrant piano lending a Latin subtext. Her voice grows appealing husky on "More," a sultry slow jam with strings, and comes on like spicy honey on "Bottom of the Bottle," which evokes Erykah Badu-style soul. With a disco breeze and rapid-clip bass, "Champagne Flutes" is the most "contemporary pop" song on the record, and Day applies a light touch to celebrate aspirationally faking it until you make it ("Malt liquor in a champagne flute"). It ends with a show of gratitude, as she enlists her own mom for "Thank You God," reading Psalm 62 over the sound of gently moving water. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
