Le cinquième album du chanteur australien Jordan Rakei marque son départ du label Ninja Tune, avec lequel il avait publié ses trois derniers efforts entre 2016 et 2019, et son arrivée chez Decca. Un détail ? Non, car ce changement de crèmerie amène son lot de changements esthétiques. Voici désormais un artiste défait de ses complexes, de ces obstacles qui l’empêchaient de voir les choses en grand, de proposer des harmonies, des orchestrations massives. Sur The Loop, tout sonne fort, de la batterie, qui revêt souvent des airs de breakbeat hip-hop (un lien avec le titre de l’album et son concept de boucle ?), aux guitares multiples, des chœurs parfois gigantesques aux thèmes visant les sentiments universels. Pourtant, rien ne vient créer le déséquilibre, rien ne recouvre cette voix qui, après une production léchée, vient se lover dans ces arrangements d’une grande subtilité. Cette sérénité propice à l’expression permet à Jordan Rakei d’explorer sans peine des registres difficiles tels que la partie soul-pop de la discographie de Bill Withers, chanteur qu’il adule et dont il s’est abondamment nourri pour penser ce très bel album, temps fort de la carrière de son auteur. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
